Happy National Camera Day! What better way to celebrate than exploring the digital collections on UW-Milwaukee's very own American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) website. The digital collections consist of online maps and photos, aerial photography, and geospatial data. The library is also open to the public if you would like to view their wide array of print collections (cartographic, photographic, archives, and books). To stick with the theme of national camera day, here are a couple photos of Milwaukee that were found in the digital collections:
The above photo is from 1895 (no photographer credits listed)! Looking north up the river, in the background is the Pabst Building and an unfinished City Hall. The steamship on the left is the Virginia, a twin screw propeller. Built in 1891 for $250,000, it could hold 300 passengers. Next to it is the Chicago, built in 1874.
Pictured above is the commercial stretch of Brady Street including Regano's Roman Coin bar and Glorioso Brothers grocery store. St. Hedwig's church can be seen in the background.
